Last week, an international heritage master class took place in Kameňany, Slovakia. Among them were five participants from Slovenia, who went to the Slovak region of Gemer with the desire to learn about traditional and modern approaches to the revitalization of heritage buildings.
The 3-day master class focused on the revitalization of the village center around the medieval church in the settlement of Kameňany. The course was attended by 40 volunteers from Slovakia, Slovenia, and Romania, who arranged green areas around the church and learned about the traditional approaches of making lime plaster near the parish. The works took place next to the Lutheran church directly in the center of the village of Kameňany, which is part of the Gothic route in the Gemer region. The interior of the Romanesque-Gothic church is painted with medieval frescoes, and the outside is surrounded by a defensive wall. There are other historical buildings belonging to the church nearby. The immediate surroundings of the church needed quite a bit of attention. The participants took care of the cleaning and removal of excess material and the design and replanting of the old flower garden. They used plants suitable for the location next to the monument and typical of the region. Landscape architect Michala Poláková led the arrangement of the external surroundings.Arborist Marek Áč led the pruning of linden trees near the church, which threatened the monument. On the second day of the workshop, the participants also planted a new linden tree in a more historically suitable place. At the facility near the church, the participants tackled lime plasters. With Viera Kozárova, they learned how to slake lime, prepare the base layer on the wall, mix plaster the old way, and use traditional materials. The application of lime plasters varied considerably in different historical periods. Under the leadership of restorer Juraj Gregorek, they tested Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque techniques as well as techniques from the 19th century. The participants could also try Renaissance painting with different techniques and the preparation of natural pigments. On the last day of the course, the participants went on a tour of selected parts of the Gemer region.During the course, the participants were accommodated in a former Franciscan monastery from the 18th century, which today represents the cultural and creative center of the nearby town of Rožňava. The rejuvenation of the center of the village of Kameňany represents great progress in relation to heritage, environmental protection, and improved quality of life for the local population. The inhabitants of the village also participated in the renovation to a large extent, they acquired key knowledge and skills to maintain the surroundings of the heritage buildings in the same way in the future.
